Kelsey Plum Shatters Personal Record with 43 Points in Sparks' Overtime Victory
PHOENIX (AP) — Kelsey Plum achieved a remarkable milestone by scoring a career-high 43 points, leading the Los Angeles Sparks to a thrilling 111-102 overtime win against the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday night. This victory improved the Sparks' record to 3-2 in the Commissioner's Cup.
In the overtime period, Nneka Ogwumike kicked things off with a jumper, followed by Plum's two free throws and a four-point play from Cameron Brink, propelling Los Angeles to an early 8-0 lead in the extra session. Plum’s extraordinary performance included surpassing her previous high of 40 points with a layup just 1.6 seconds before the end of regulation, which sent the game into overtime. She finished the night shooting 14 of 26 from the field, including five three-pointers, and made 10 of her 12 free throw attempts while also contributing seven assists.
Los Angeles also saw Rae Burrell come off the bench to score a career-high 24 points, while Ogwumike recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. On the other side, Phoenix's Kahleah Copper matched her own personal best with 41 points, hitting 16 of 29 shots and making six three-pointers along with 10 rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Mercury (4-11) have now lost three consecutive games and nine of their last eleven. Natasha Mack and Alyssa Thomas contributed with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and 10 points and 12 assists, respectively. Phoenix holds a 2-3 record in the Commissioner's Cup.
Next up, the Sparks will face Golden State on Monday night, while the Mercury will host Las Vegas on Wednesday.
