Kentucky Football Community Grieves the Loss of Freshman Nicholas Smith
The University of Kentucky is mourning the tragic passing of redshirt freshman Nicholas Smith, a defensive lineman from Loganville, Georgia. The announcement was made on the school's official X account on Monday, revealing that Smith was only 20 years old at the time of his death.
Will Stein, the new head coach for the Wildcats, expressed his condolences in a heartfelt message shared on social media. He stated, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him. This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory.”
Details surrounding the circumstances of Smith's death remain unclear. Known affectionately as "Happy" and later as "Big Happ" by his teammates, Smith had chosen to play for Kentucky over offers from Georgia and Georgia Tech. During his time at the university, he was pursuing a degree in Community Leadership and Development at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, with aspirations of starting a food business after his football career.
The University of Kentucky also released a statement expressing their sorrow: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved teammate Nic Smith. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Nic’s family, friends and the members of our program. We ask that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
Further information regarding the situation will be provided as it becomes available. This tragic event has touched not only the football team but the larger community as well.
