KHSAA baseball Sixth, Seventh Region finals postponed until Thursday
The Sixth and Seventh Region baseball tournament championship games have been postponed until Thursday.
Joe Scheper, tournament director and athletics director at Eastern High School, said the decision was made “after consulting with local meteorologists, reviewing the most current weather forecasts and discussing the situation with all schools involved. … While the overall severe weather threat for Wednesday is not expected to be significant, the forecast does include the potential for lightning and fast-moving storms that could create delays or interruptions.”
Scheper noted the University of Louisville, which is hosting the finals at Jim Patterson Stadium, requires the stadium to be cleared during lightning delays, “which could … make it difficult to complete the games in a timely manner.”
“We fully understand that this adjustment does impact pitching availability and preparation to some degree, and we certainly do not take the lightly,” Scheper said.
“We believe Thursday’s forecast provides the best opportunity to complete both championship games smoothly, safely and without interruption.”
The Sixth Region final will match Bullitt East (23-11) against Bullitt Central (20-14) at 5:30 p.m. The Cougars won the regular-season meeting 14-5 on May 7.
The Seventh Region final will match No. 1-ranked Trinity (36-3) against No. 9 St. Xavier (28-11) at 8 p.m. The Shamrocks won the regular-season meeting 6-3 on April 22.
The Sixth and Seventh Region champions are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the state tournament on Friday, June 5, at Legends Field in Lexington.
As of 11:30 a.m., the Sixth and Seventh Region softball championship games set for Wednesday at UofL’s Ulmer Stadium were still on as scheduled.
