Kirk Cousins Emphasizes Collaboration Over Mentorship in Quarterback Room
Kirk Cousins is stepping back from the title of mentor to rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, suggesting that the notion is somewhat exaggerated. The seasoned quarterback advocates for a more collaborative atmosphere among the team's quarterbacks. "It's more of a narrative than it is the truth," Cousins stated on Tuesday, as reported by Ryan McFadden of ESPN. "They're pretty good players, pretty experienced, and I'm learning a lot from them too, and asking questions to them."
At 37, Cousins recently joined the Raiders, just weeks before the team selected Mendoza with the first overall pick. While he brings considerable experience and a deep understanding of Klint Kubiak’s offensive strategies from their time together in Minnesota, Aidan O'Connell, who has spent four seasons with the franchise, has a greater familiarity with the organization.
Cousins emphasized that all three quarterbacks—himself, O'Connell, and Mendoza—are involved in the learning journey and are collectively striving for improvement. "I've always felt I prepare my best during the season when we can all kind of be together in that room in the evening, going over things together rather than working in our own," he explained. "I think when we can kind of all be given feedback on each other, that's when I think the best ideas come out."
