Knicks Fans Encounter Security Confusion at Madison Square Garden Ahead of Trump’s Game 3 Visit
As New York Knicks supporters gathered at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, they were met with unexpected complications in the security process well before reaching the arena's entrance. The presence of former President Donald Trump heightened the stakes for the evening, leading to increased security measures including additional screenings, barricades, road closures, and the involvement of the Secret Service.
Witness accounts from fans outside MSG painted a picture of disarray, with many expressing frustration over the lack of clear directions at the various checkpoints. One fan shared on X that they had spent about an hour waiting to enter, only to be redirected multiple times without understanding where they were supposed to go. Initially sent to the corner of 34th and 8th, fans faced confusion as officials informed them to move to 34th and 7th instead, only to be directed again to 32nd and 6th by another set of police officers.
This chaotic shifting led to large groups of people milling about Midtown, struggling to find the correct entry point. Estimates suggested that hundreds, if not close to a thousand, fans were left without clear guidance, exacerbating the situation and creating a frustrating atmosphere outside the venue.
Further complicating matters, another fan, Matt Guzman, noted on X that the security checks were particularly stringent due to Trump's attendance, as the Secret Service managed the screening of both fans and media. Guzman described how he was required to demonstrate that his iPad was functioning, had to open his AirPods case, and even had his book examined page by page, showcasing the heightened level of scrutiny beyond what is usually expected at sporting events.
These strict security protocols, including a no-bag policy, TSA-style screenings, and limited pedestrian access, were all implemented in light of the former president's visit. While it's understandable that such measures would be necessary for a presidential appearance, the absence of clear communication left fans feeling frustrated on what was meant to be an exciting night for Knicks supporters.
