Not too long ago, the New York Knicks were in a 22-point hole toward the end of their first Eastern Conference finals clash.
Most teams in that predicament would have ended the contest with the loss and began the series with a 1-0 deficit. The Knicks, on the other hand, never wavered and slowly began closing the gap before taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to overtime and outplaying them in the extra period.
The Knicks were rewarded with a colossal 115-104 victory, and from there, the Jalen Brunson-led squad took complete control of the series. New York eliminated Cleveland on Monday night after securing a 130-93 victory to complete the sweep and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
With the series-clinching win, the Knicks are officially on the verge of breaking a lengthy 53-year championship drought.
In 1973, New York matched up against the Los Angeles Lakers in the final round of the postseason. The series started on a disappointing note for the Knicks, as they suffered a crushing 115-112 loss to the Lakers in Game 1.
Impressively, though, New York won four consecutive games and finished the 1972-73 season as the last team standing. Fast forward to 2026, and the Knicks have an opportunity to replicate the postseason/NBA finals success achieved by the organization five decades ago.
New York will patiently await the winner of the competitive Western Conference series between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.
