Knights Struggle in Series Opener Against Comets; Barons Split Doubleheader

The Charlotte Knights faced a tough outing against the Oklahoma City Comets, falling 10-1 in their latest matchup. This defeat marks a challenging start to the week for the Knights (35-30), who have lost the first two games in their series against the Comets (37-27). Despite the recent release of White Sox icon Seby Zavala on June 5, the Comets showcased their depth and skill on the field.

Knights pitcher Jonathan Cannon, 25, began the game strongly, shutting down the Comets for the first four innings. Unfortunately, the fifth inning proved to be a turning point. Cannon struggled, allowing two singles that set up runners on first and second with two outs. A double-steal by the Comets and a throwing error by catcher Michael Turner led to both runners crossing home plate. Although Turner later redeemed himself with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, the Knights could not capitalize further, managing only one run throughout the game.

The Comets capitalized on the Knights’ mistakes, scoring four additional runs in the sixth inning, all of which were charged to Cannon, bringing his total to six runs allowed—though only two were earned due to defensive errors. The Knights' bullpen also struggled, giving up four earned runs over 3 2/3 innings. Despite racking up ten hits, the Knights failed to convert, going 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and leaving a staggering 16 men on base.

In a doubleheader, the Birmingham Barons (22-37) managed a split against the Biloxi Shuckers (30-27). After a lopsided 14-1 loss in the first game, the Barons bounced back to win 2-1 in the second match, thanks to a clutch performance from reliever Jonathan Clark. In the nightcap, the Barons struck early with a run in the first inning and held on through a tight contest, eventually scoring the winning run in the eighth.

The Knights and Barons aim to regroup as they continue their respective series. The Knights will seek to improve their hitting and capitalize on scoring opportunities, while the Barons look to build on their successful second game.
