TORONTO (AP) — Brittney Sykes delivered an impressive performance, matching her career high with 38 points, leading the expansion Toronto Tempo to a thrilling 106-102 overtime victory against the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night in the Commissioner’s Cup. With this win, the Tempo improved to 7-5, marking their fourth victory in the last five games, despite facing a 14-point deficit during the second quarter.
Sykes showcased her prowess at the free-throw line, sinking all 13 attempts and crucially hitting four in the final 1:19 of regulation. Alongside her, Marina Mabrey contributed 21 points, while Laura Juskaite added 19 to the team's total.
On the other side, Aaliyah Edwards, hailing from Kingston, Ontario, marked her own milestone with a career-high 24 points for the Sun (2-12), shooting 8 of 9 from the field. Teammate Leila Lacau also reached the 24-point mark, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
In another match, the Los Angeles Sparks triumphed over the Seattle Storm 88-83, with Nneka Ogwumike scoring a season-high 24 points against her former team. Kelsey Plum added 19 points and 11 assists, while Cameron Brink contributed 15 points off the bench. This victory moved Los Angeles to a 6-6 record in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Seattle struggled with their seventh consecutive loss, despite Natisha Hiedeman's 16 points and contributions from all five starters, each scoring in double figures. The Sparks took control of the game with a pivotal three free throws from Chance Gray in the fourth quarter, seizing a lead they maintained until the final buzzer.
