Lions Eye Major Extension for Star Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs

The Detroit Lions have been no strangers to securing substantial contracts in recent years, having made significant investments in key players like Jared Goff, Aidan Hutchinson, and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Now, attention turns to running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who is eligible for a contract extension that could potentially reshape the running back market.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Gibbs is poised to command a lucrative deal, potentially exceeding $20 million annually. The Lions have shown a clear interest in finalizing an agreement with Gibbs, even though concrete progress has yet to be made. "You have the next couple months leading into training camp to try to hash this out," Fowler noted.

The situation is further complicated by the presence of Bijan Robinson, another top-tier running back also seeking an extension. Gibbs may opt to wait for Robinson's contract resolution before proceeding, creating a strategic dynamic between the two elite players. "It’s a little bit of a game of chess between those two top running backs," Fowler remarked.

In his first three seasons, Gibbs has built an impressive track record, amassing 3,580 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns, along with 181 receptions for 1,449 yards and 10 additional touchdowns. His dual-threat capability makes him one of the most formidable running backs in the NFL; he ranked fifth in scrimmage yards last season and third in 2024.

Given his remarkable performance and role in the Lions' dynamic offense, Gibbs is on the path to potentially becoming the highest-paid running back in NFL history. "There are some I’ve talked to around the league who believe Gibbs is the very best running back over Robinson in the entire NFL," Fowler stated, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming negotiations.
