Lions Tight End Sam LaPorta Showing Positive Signs Ahead of Training Camp

During the initial session of the Detroit Lions' mandatory minicamp, standout tight end Sam LaPorta participated partially. This aligns with his recent activities this spring, where he has primarily engaged in light jogging and walkthrough drills throughout the organized team activities (OTAs). LaPorta underwent back surgery last November due to a herniated disc that he acquired during the Lions' Week 10 victory over the Washington Commanders.

When asked about LaPorta's readiness for the upcoming training camp, head coach Dan Campbell provided an encouraging update. "We like where he's going. He's trending the right way," Campbell stated, reflecting optimism regarding LaPorta's recovery.

As LaPorta is in line for a contract extension this summer, ESPN's Adam Schefter previously expressed hope about the Lions' chances of finalizing deals with both LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs during the offseason. Having LaPorta back at full strength is crucial for Detroit's ambitions to reclaim the NFC North title and contend for the Super Bowl.

LaPorta made a significant impact during his rookie season, recording 889 yards and 10 touchdowns on 86 receptions. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 245 pounds, he earned Pro Bowl honors and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2023. In 2024, he continued to impress with 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. Last year, in just nine games, LaPorta tallied 40 receptions for 489 yards and three scores.
