Longhorns Fall to Bulldogs, Ending CWS Journey with 2-0 Defeat
The Texas Longhorns' aspirations for a remarkable comeback from the loser's bracket in the College World Series came to an end on Tuesday. Playing at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Texas was defeated 2-0 by the Georgia Bulldogs. Known for their home run prowess, Georgia relied on small ball tactics, scoring both runs in the fifth and seventh innings with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.
Texas struggled offensively, managing only four hits and three walks, leaving seven runners stranded on base. The team's performance with runners on base was particularly dismal, going 0-for-8 and failing to capitalize in key situations. This defeat marked a disappointing conclusion to their season, as the Longhorns couldn't find their rhythm against Georgia’s pitching for the second consecutive game.
Despite the lack of run support, Texas pitchers delivered commendable performances. Redshirt senior Luke Harrison set a new career high with 11 strikeouts, allowing just one run on two hits over 5.2 innings. Freshman Sam Cozart followed with six strikeouts in 3.1 innings, conceding one run on three hits.
Harrison showcased dominance early on, striking out 10 batters through the first four innings, but faltered slightly in the fifth, allowing a run after Georgia executed a successful small ball strategy. Cozart came in to relieve Harrison under pressure in the sixth inning, successfully preventing further damage by striking out the bases-loaded batter.
Georgia's Dylan Vigue, who had struggled to go deep into games this season, faced early pressure from Texas. However, he managed to navigate through the innings effectively, striking out Texas hitters and maintaining control. The Bulldogs ultimately manufactured their second run in the seventh, aided by a series of mishaps and a blooper that contributed to their scoring.
As the Longhorns entered the final inning trailing by two, they were unable to mount a comeback, sealing their exit from the tournament. This loss signifies a challenging season for Texas, who now turns its attention to rebuilding for the next year.
