Luca Zidane Represents Algeria at the World Cup: The Legacy of a Footballing Family

While Zinedine Zidane is celebrated as one of France's football legends, his son, Luca, has taken a different path as the starting goalkeeper for the Algerian national team at the 2026 World Cup. Fans have noticed the iconic Zidane name on Luca's jersey, sparking curiosity about his choice to represent Algeria instead of France.

Luca's decision stems from his familial roots; both of his paternal grandparents hail from Algeria. Although he was born in France and spent significant time in Spain due to his father's illustrious career with Real Madrid, Luca has maintained a strong connection to his Algerian heritage. “We’ve lived in an Algerian culture since we were small,” he shared with The Athletic. “It’s an honor to play for Algeria. The final decision was mine, but I spoke with my family, my parents, my brothers, my grandfather. My father was happy; he knew it was something I wanted to do. To be able to play in a World Cup is a dream for any kid.”

At 28 years old, Luca made his international debut for Algeria in October. Shortly thereafter, he participated in the Africa Cup of Nations, where Algeria was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Nigeria on January 10. With this World Cup appearance, Luca is embracing a unique opportunity, blending his family's legacy with his own aspirations in the world of football.
