Luka Doncic Discusses Ideal Players for Championship Contention

This summer marks a pivotal moment for the Los Angeles Lakers as they aim to assemble a championship-quality team around Luka Doncic, nearly 18 months after acquiring him from the Dallas Mavericks. While key players like LeBron James and Austin Reaves are set to be re-signed, the Lakers will likely need to bring in one or two additional players from outside the organization.

Currently in Europe as part of his partnership with Jordan Brand, Doncic shared his vision for the type of teammates he believes are essential for clinching his first NBA championship. According to Luka Updates, he stated, “I think mainly shooters and a big man who can run the pick-and-roll and jump so I can pass to him. If I have shooters, they won’t double me as much and it helps me out.”

Boosting the center position appears to be a priority for the Lakers. Deandre Ayton, the starting center, has shown flashes of potential but has often been criticized for his inconsistency. An NBA executive noted that the franchise is “laser focused on a big man” to enhance their roster. During his time with Dallas, Doncic thrived alongside players like Daniel Gafford and Derek Lively II, who played crucial roles in leading the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals.

In terms of outside shooting, the Lakers finished the regular season ranked 14th in three-point shooting percentage and 24th in attempts. Only three players on the team managed to shoot over 36% from beyond the arc: Doncic, Rui Hachimura, and Luke Kennard, both of whom will enter free agency at the end of this month.

With approximately $50 million in salary cap space available, Los Angeles faces the challenge of navigating a free agency market that may offer limited high-caliber options.
