Mac Jones Embraces Role with 49ers Amid Trade Speculation
The San Francisco 49ers have faced considerable speculation regarding the future of backup quarterback Mac Jones throughout the offseason. The former first-round draft pick from the New England Patriots recently received a salary increase from the 49ers after the franchise opted not to deal him during the 2026 draft, following his impressive performance of 5-3 as a starter in relief of the injured Brock Purdy.
Despite the rumors surrounding his potential exit, Jones' performance has played a crucial role in keeping the 49ers' hopes alive for both the playoffs and the NFC West title. He wrapped up the season with a commendable 69.6 percent completion rate, amassing 2,151 passing yards, along with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
While Jones was aware of the trade discussions, he remarked, "it was made very clear to me that I was going to be here from this organization.” This clarity likely stemmed from the preference expressed by general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan to retain Jones unless they received an overwhelmingly enticing offer.
Jones remains optimistic about his future, though he acknowledges the challenge of reclaiming a starting position in San Francisco, which hinges on Purdy's health. “Obviously, you want to have a chance to start,” he stated. “But I also love it here, and I'm not really in the business of leaving good people, so I'm not mad about it at all.” He emphasized his commitment to supporting Purdy and maintaining the positive atmosphere within the team.
Although Jones could find himself a trade candidate if other teams suffer injuries, he appears focused on his current role. With his contract expiring in 2027, he may be eyeing his next opportunity during free agency, or he might choose to remain in a supportive role with a well-regarded organization. "I want to build on it and have another good year," he expressed. "It's never been really about the money for me, to be honest. I'm just glad that I'm having fun again. That's priceless to me.”
