Major Mismatches Mark the 2026 World Cup

The upcoming 2026 World Cup is set to feature an unprecedented number of competitive mismatches due to FIFA’s decision to expand the tournament from 32 to 48 teams. This change not only increases the number of participating nations but also leads to clashes between teams with significant ranking disparities.

Among the most notable mismatches is the clash scheduled for Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET, where No. 6 Brazil will face off against No. 83 Haiti, creating a staggering gap of 77 rankings. This is the fourth-largest differential recorded since FIFA began its rankings in 1992, trailing only three matches from the 2010 World Cup involving North Korea.

Another notable encounter in Group C will see No. 7 Morocco challenge Haiti on June 24, which represents a 76-place difference, tying for the fifth-largest gap in World Cup history. Additionally, in Group G, No. 9 Belgium is set to confront No. 85 New Zealand on June 26, also reflecting a 76-place disparity.

Group E will showcase a significant match as well, with Germany recently dominating Curacao 7-1 on June 14, marking a 72-place difference, the ninth-largest gap to date. Meanwhile, No. 4 England is scheduled to play against No. 73 Ghana on June 23, creating a 69-place gap that ranks as the tenth-largest ever.

Notably, the 2010 and 2026 tournaments account for all of the top 16 matches with the widest ranking differences. The only other tournament to feature a significant gap outside these years is the 2014 World Cup, where No. 1 Spain faced 62nd-ranked Australia. Other mismatches in 2026 include No. 20 Iran's 2-2 draw with No. 85 New Zealand and matches involving No. 1 Argentina against No. 63 Jordan and No. 11 Croatia against No. 73 Ghana.

While the rankings used for these matchups stem from the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings released on June 11, the same day the tournament commenced, the potential for upsets remains high as teams from diverse backgrounds compete on the world stage.
