Malan Potgieter Achieves Incredible 91 Consecutive Holes Without a Bogey at NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Theo Sliman, the men's golf coach at Louisiana, has an interesting incentive for his players who manage to finish rounds without any bogeys. For those exceptional performances, he treats them to steaks, while the rest of the team gets hot dogs. After senior Malan Potgieter's recent outstanding play, Sliman might need to stock up on steaks.

Potgieter accomplished his fifth consecutive bogey-free round during the second round of the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, posting a solid 4-under 68 at Omni La Costa. Remarkably, this streak extends to 91 holes without a bogey, beginning from the last hole of the Sun Belt Championship the previous month. This impressive run includes 54 holes at the NCAA Athens Regional followed by another 36 at the national championship.

"I think I'm going to have to get half a cow," Sliman joked about the number of steaks he owes Potgieter. The 91 consecutive holes without a bogey is believed to be an unparalleled achievement in college golf, especially during postseason play. Previously, Alabama's Bobby Wyatt held the record with 76 straight holes without a bogey in 2014, but Potgieter has now surpassed that mark.

Potgieter attributes his success to improved ball striking. "Most of it's probably my ball striking," he stated, explaining how he managed to refine his game after a tough performance during the conference. His precision has led him to hit 83 of 90 greens since the start of the NCAA Regionals, a significant factor in his remarkable achievement.

Originally from South Africa, Potgieter is not related to PGA Tour pro Aldrich Potgieter. He was drawn to Louisiana during his recruitment and has remained committed to the Ragin' Cajuns despite gaining considerable recognition as one of the top players in the nation, currently ranked 37th in the NCAA standings.

As he heads into the third round, Potgieter is just two shots behind Arizona's Filip Jakubcik. He knows that to keep his bogey-free streak alive, he must maintain accuracy with his approach shots, as missing greens at Omni La Costa can lead to significant trouble. "I grew up being an underdog," Potgieter reflected. "I wanted to take this program as far as I can." With his incredible play at the national championship, he is proving that underdogs can indeed make history.
