Manchester United continue their hunt for Champions League qualification as they face a difficult Premier League meeting with fellow European challengers Brentford on Monday.

Under Michael Carrick's steady interim leadership, the Red Devils have rocketed up the Premier League table. They sit third in the standings, level with Liverpool and Aston Villa on points but ahead on various tiebreakers. They can claim third all for themselves with a result today.

However, it promises to be a tough matchup as the Bees are also chasing a spot in Europe. Keith Andrews has them sitting ninth, level on points with Chelsea above them and Fulham below. They could vault themselves as high as sixth with a win in this match, putting themselves in a strong position for continental qualification.

Man United vs. Brentford key moments

65th min: Both teams have shown an impetus to get forward, but there has been very little quality in front of goal on either end. Brentford continue to be plagued by struggles with finishing, as Igor Thiago is having a poor match at the head of the attack.

2nd half kickoff: They're back under way at Old Trafford, with Michael Carrick making a change at the break. He's brought off Amad Diallo and replaced him with Noussair Mazraoui, suggesting a change of shape.

While Amad wasn't great in the first half, he had good influence, so this change is likely more to do with Carrick wanting to switch to a back four to minimise the effect of Brentford's full-backs who had lots of joy in the opening 45 minutes.

HALFTIME: Man United 2-0 Brentford

Manchester United have a multi-goal halftime lead, much to the chagrin of visiting Brentford who have been excellent at times but failed to make good on that quality play.

The difference in this game is finishing and goalkeeping, as Brentford have largely matched Man United in creating chances on goal, but fell short of the mark finishing off those chances while Senne Lammens has been brilliant in goal.

Brentford will back themselves to claw back into the game after the break, but they will need to make the most of their opportunities because on the other end is Bruno Fernandes who is quite simply on fire at the moment.

43rd min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! BENJAMIN SESKO SCORES ON THE COUNTER! Bruno Fernandes with another assist!

As he has so many times this season and beyond, Bruno Fernandes runs a picture-perfect counter-attack and Sesko finishes it off! The Portuguese midfielder picks up the ball in his own half and runs a three-on-two break. He knows he has time, and waits and waits and waits until one of the Brentford defenders commits to him, feeding the free man in Sesko for a finish over the shoulder of Kelleher!

Fernandes is now just one assist from equaling the single-season Premier League record!

41st min: Chance, Man United! Amad Diallo finds the back of the net with a shot that pings in off the inside of the far post, but the chance is nullified by the offside flag, and the replay shows Amad was MILES offside on the delivery from midfield.

35th min: Chance, Brentford! IGOR THIAGO SLIPS AT THE WORST MOMENT! Brentford looked as if they were through on goal as the Golden Boot chaser is sent through by a lovely vertical ball, but right as he was going to shoot he loses his footing and stumbles to the ground! He then tries to give it a swipe while lying on the turf, but he can't connect! That's a HUGE let-off for United!

Then, moments later, SENNE LAMMENS WITH A MASSIVE SAVE! Thiago is once again clean through on goal, this time from a long ball over the top, but under pressure by Ayden Heaven from behind, his shot is close enough to Lammens that the Belgian goalkeeper makes a fabulous reactionary stop diving to his left!

AND LAMMENS AGAIN! He's had to come up big again as a ball in from Mikkel Damsgaard strikes the arm of a United defender and redirects on goal, but the United goalkeeper makes another exceptional diving stop! He's having a wonderful

25th min: Brentford have reacted extremely well to going behind, but United have weathered the storm — if only just. Senne Lammens was required to make a superb save on Michael Kayode in the 17th minute, but otherwise United have done well to limit Brentford's chances.

United are starting to regain control of the match, now that the threat has largely passed...

11th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! CASEMIRO POKES A HEADER INTO THE BACK OF THE NET!!!! United are in front, and it comes off a corner, as the Brazilian has scored in three straight home league games!

Minutes after Harry Maguire was inches from scoring from his own header off a set-piece, the United defender heads a corner way out wide, redirecting the ball to the far post where Casemiro is waiting to nod it in from close range! Brentford have only conceded three goals from corners coming into this game, the best Premier League mark, but they've been torn to shreds twice here, and conceded on the latter!

6th min: Luke Shaw picks up an unnecessary early yellow card for barging over Kevin Schade in midfield, a completely unnecessary foul which will leave him on a knife edge the rest of the match.

2nd min: Chance, Man United! HOW HAVE MAN UNITED NOT SCORED?!?!?! Kobbie Mainoo produces one of the most sensational, stunning on-ball runs the Premier League has seen all season along, leaving multiple Brentford defenders flailing in his wake before a behind-the-back touch skips by the last man and forces Caoimhin Kelleher to come out of goal.

His final move is to touch laterally to Amad Diallo with the whole goal to shoot at, but he tries to pass it in the back of the net and has the effort deflected agonizingly wide! That Mainoo run deserved a better finish!

HIGHLIGHT:Watch Diallo chance in UK

Kickoff: The ball is rolling at Old Trafford! Manchester United can take the next step in solidifying their Champions League qualification with a win today, but Brentford are firmly in the mix for Europe as well and will know these points could be invaluable!

Lineups: The starting XI for each team has been posted! For Manchester United, Matheus Cunha is not present in the squad after picking up a groin problem just before the match. Amad Diallo starts in his place along the United attack, while Lenny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu return to take a spot on the bench.

For Brentford, there are no surprises whatsoever as the Bees have all their players expected to be fit at their disposal.

Prematch:We here at The Sporting News asked the question almost two months ago whether Michael Carrick should be considered for the permanent Manchester United managerial job. There were a lot of questions still to be answered at that time.

There still are, of course, but there have also been a lot of answers presented between then and now. The ship remains steady. Champions League qualification is very likely. The team is clicking. No, the results haven't put Man United on course for a title challenge this season, nor are they likely to next season unless things change drastically with the roster, but this is marketable improvement from the Ruben Amorim days, across a sample size that matters. That should mean something.

What will we see from Carrick today?
