Manuel Ugarte Sets High Expectations for Uruguay’s World Cup Journey

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has expressed strong confidence in Uruguay's chances of clinching the World Cup title this summer in North America. As Uruguay prepares for the tournament, Ugarte aims to contribute significantly to the team's aspirations of adding another championship to their storied history.

Despite its small population, Uruguay boasts a rich football legacy, having secured the World Cup trophy twice, although the last victory dates back 75 years. Ugarte, who faced challenges in securing playing time during the 2025/26 season at United, remains determined to make a mark at the World Cup, especially with speculation surrounding his future at the club amid interest from Turkish teams and other leagues.

Speaking to club media, Ugarte remarked, "Uruguay is a small country, but we have a history in football. We won the World Cup before. We know the reality, we know the favourite teams, but Uruguay always can win, in my opinion." He emphasized the pride he feels representing his nation, stating, "I love my country. I’m so proud. We are few people, that means we are so together."

Ugarte also highlighted the importance of teammate Federico Valverde, describing him as "the most complete player in the world," and praised their friendship. He reminisced about his conversations with Guillermo Varela, a former United player, who fondly recalls his time at the club.

Reflecting on his upcoming training under Marcelo Bielsa, Ugarte noted, "He’s a special manager. He wants to control everything." He believes that the rigorous preparation will help the team achieve a high level of intensity, crucial for their World Cup campaign. Uruguay begins its tournament journey on June 16, facing Saudi Arabia.
