Mariners Dominate Nationals 10-2 After Rain Delay, Emerson Shines
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Seattle Mariners kicked off their series against the Washington Nationals with an impressive 10-2 victory on Friday night, highlighted by rookie Colt Emerson’s home run during a productive five-run second inning. The game faced a lengthy rain delay of 2 hours and 11 minutes before play commenced.
Seattle's starting pitcher, Bryce Miller, delivered a strong performance, allowing just two runs over a career-high eight innings. The Mariners, who lead the American League West, did experience a setback when outfielder Randy Arozarena exited the game in the third inning due to a suspected leg injury sustained while running out a ground ball.
For Washington, James Wood contributed with his 19th home run, but the team fell back to a .500 record at 35-35, marking a disappointing 12-21 at home this season. The Mariners started their scoring spree with Dominic Canzone's two-run triple, followed by a sacrifice fly from Miles Mastrobuoni. After Jhonny Pereda's single, Emerson launched a fastball from Zack Littell deep into center field.
Emerson, now one of only four Mariners to hit five home runs before turning 21, joins the ranks of legends like Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and José López. Miller (3-0) did allow a couple of homers, one to Wood in the fourth and another to Dylan Crews in the eighth, but overall he excelled with seven strikeouts and just four hits, while issuing no walks.
Further extending the lead, Cole Young scored on a wild pitch, and Luke Raley knocked in two runs with a single in the fifth. Canzone added a homer in the eighth, followed by a solo shot from Josh Naylor in the ninth. Littell (6-5) struggled on the mound for Washington, giving up five runs in 1 2/3 innings without a strikeout.
Looking ahead, Seattle's Luis Castillo (2-5, 5.16 ERA) is scheduled to face off against Washington's Cade Cavalli (3-4, 3.88) in Saturday’s matchup.
