Mario Medina Shines for Mount Carmel in Class 4A Semifinals Despite Loss

As Mount Carmel advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in over a decade, senior catcher Mario Medina emerged as a stabilizing force for the team. Known for his ability to maintain composure and focus without needing to say much, Medina's leadership was pivotal throughout the Caravan's journey. "It was a big game and a special moment," he reflected. "I’ve been with these guys for four years and these are like my brothers. There was nowhere else I’d want to be."

In the Class 4A semifinals held at Slammers Stadium in Joliet, Medina contributed significantly, recording one of the Caravan's three hits and executing a critical defensive play. However, Mount Carmel fell short against the defending champions, Libertyville, losing 3-1. Notre Dame-bound Connor Elenteny put forth a solid performance, striking out five batters over six innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits. Meanwhile, Illinois commit Joey Ireland and Triton recruit Logan Fernandez each made their mark with key plays.

Mount Carmel, now holding a record of 30-11, will face Naperville Central (30-10) in the third-place game at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Despite their loss, the Caravan showed resilience, rallying in the seventh inning. After falling behind 3-0, the team drew three walks, and Pancho Vazquez was hit by a pitch, leading to a crucial run. With the bases loaded, however, Aksel McKnight secured the win for Libertyville by getting Fernandez to fly out.

Medina played a key role in keeping the game competitive, particularly with a standout defensive play alongside senior right fielder Haiden Lajcin in the third inning. After Lajcin caught a fly ball, he made a strong throw to home plate, where Medina successfully tagged out Braden Tolzien, preventing further scoring. "The throw was there and I just had to dive in for the tag. It definitely felt like a big momentum shift," Medina noted.

Mount Carmel's coach, Brian Hurry, praised the duo's effort, saying, "That was an unreal play by Haiden and Mario. A great throw and a great tag." Throughout the season, Medina has embraced a leadership role, guiding a talented pitching staff and inspiring his teammates. Elenteny echoed this sentiment, stating, "He’s the best that you can get. He doesn’t say much but he’s still the biggest leader on the field. He’s been like a rock for our team. There’s nobody else I’d rather throw to."

As the Caravan prepares for their final game together, the senior class has left a lasting impact on the program. "They’ve certainly made their mark on a program that has a lot of tradition and a lot of pride," Coach Hurry remarked. "Over the last three or four years that I’ve taken the field with these guys, it’s a lifetime of memories."
