The atmosphere surrounding a baseball team can shift dramatically in a short period. Just a fortnight ago, the Diamondbacks capped off a successful road trip with a sweep of the Giants, pushing their record to a season-high seven games above .500 as they headed to Seattle. However, since that triumph, the team has struggled, managing only three wins against nine losses and failing to secure a series victory. Their offense has faltered, averaging a mere three runs per game, hitting only .205, and managing just one home run per game. This downturn, coupled with a decline in pitching performance, has seen their record drop to just one game above the .500 mark.
On this night, Ryne Nelson's pitching woes were evident as the Marlins took advantage of his lack of control. They attacked him aggressively from the start, generating solid contact while Nelson struggled to elicit swings and misses. Fortunately for him, strong defensive plays early in the game helped him escape some challenging situations. However, the Marlins' relentless offense broke through in the fourth inning. After a leadoff single by Heriberto Hernandez, Nelson managed to record two quick outs, but Owen Caissie had other plans, launching a first-pitch homer into the right field bleachers, giving the Marlins a 3-0 lead. This setback clearly rattled Nelson, who then allowed a single, hit a batter, and gave up an RBI single before Kyle Stowers capped off the inning with a three-run homer, leading to a six-run frame that ended Nelson's night.
While the Diamondbacks were shut out, their offense did create some opportunities, registering six hits and four walks. However, they squandered these chances, leaving ten runners on base and failing to capitalize in critical moments, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. On two separate occasions, they had a runner on third with fewer than two outs, including a bases-loaded situation, but could not bring anyone home.
It's clear that the current struggles cannot be pinned on a single player or unit. The entire team is facing challenges, and it falls on manager Torey Lovullo and the team's leaders to find solutions before the situation worsens. Tomorrow, Merrill Kelly will need to step up and contain the formidable Miami offense, which has scored 18 runs on 25 hits in this series, to avoid a sweep.
