Marlins Surge Past Diamondbacks with Late-Inning Rally for 10-6 Victory
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins capitalized on a strong eighth inning, scoring four runs to secure a 10-6 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. This victory marks Miami's sixth win in their last seven games, showcasing their recent form.
Otto Lopez opened the decisive eighth inning with a tiebreaking RBI single, which set off a flurry of offense that included four hits. Javier Sanoja contributed significantly with a two-run single, followed by Esteury Ruiz, who added another run with his own single, breaking a 6-6 deadlock.
Joe Mack had a standout performance, going 4 for 4 at the plate and crossing home three times. At just 22 years and 164 days old, Mack became the youngest catcher in Marlins history to achieve four hits in a single game. Moreover, he is now one of just 13 MLB catchers this season to catch 10 runners attempting to steal, accomplishing this feat in only 28 games.
The Marlins initially grabbed a 3-1 lead thanks to an RBI single from Xavier Edwards in the first inning, a one-run double from Connor Norby in the second, and another sacrifice fly from Edwards in the third. In the sixth, Liam Hicks and Kyle Stowers each delivered two-run doubles, extending Miami's lead to 6-2.
On the mound, Max Meyer pitched 5 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on seven hits while striking out five. His performance allowed him to set a franchise record with 14 unbeaten starts to begin the season, the longest such streak in Major League Baseball since Tony Gonsolin's impressive run in 2022. Pete Fairbanks closed the game with a one-hit ninth inning, striking out two batters.
The Diamondbacks fought back to tie the game in the eighth, with Ketel Marte's two-run single and Corbin Carroll's groundout scoring Tommy Troy. Carroll and Gabriel Moreno also homered for Arizona, while Marte contributed an RBI double in the seventh. Brandyn Garcia suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four runs on two hits.
Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks will have RHP Ryne Nelson (2-4, 4.60 ERA) on the mound against RHP Ryan Gusto (0-1, 10.80 ERA) in the second game of the series on Wednesday.
