Marner Makes History with Hat Trick as Knights Defeat Hurricanes in Double Overtime
Las Vegas — In an exhilarating showdown on Saturday night, Mitch Marner made history by recording the quickest hat trick in Stanley Cup history during the second period, while Shea Theodore clinched a dramatic victory for the Vegas Golden Knights with a goal in the second overtime, leading to a 5-4 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3. With this victory, the Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Marner's remarkable feat saw him score three goals in just 6:10, surpassing the previous record of 6:21 set by Maurice "The Rocket" Richard in the 1957 Stanley Cup Final. In addition to his hat trick, Marner contributed an assist, bringing his total to 28 playoff points, a new franchise record that eclipses Jack Eichel's previous mark of 26 points from last year's championship run.
The game turned wild in the third period, as Carolina launched a stunning comeback from a 4-0 deficit, scoring three goals in just 39 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest three goals by one team in Stanley Cup Final history. Andrei Svechnikov’s power-play goal with just 1:42 left in regulation forced the game into overtime.
Frederik Andersen started in goal for the Hurricanes but was replaced by Brandon Bussi after the second period. Bussi ended up making 18 saves on 19 shots. Meanwhile, Carter Hart recorded 29 saves for the Golden Knights. Tomas Hertl also made an impact with a goal and an assist for Vegas, who will look to strengthen their series lead in Game 4 on Tuesday night.
After a slow first period where the Golden Knights managed only two shots, they exploded in the second, scoring four times in a span of just over six minutes. Despite a strong effort from the Hurricanes, including goals from Jordan Martinook, Taylor Hall, and Jordan Staal, Vegas ultimately held on for the win, marking Carolina's first road loss of the playoffs.
