Brian Flores has been involved in an ongoing legal battle with the NFL since 2022. 

The former Miami Dolphins head coach sued three teams in February of 2022, alleging that he was not given a fair opportunity during the hiring process on account of his race. 

Other black NFL coaches joined the lawsuit with Flores, and the case is making its way up the legal system. 

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported a massive development on Tuesday: the United States Supreme Court has refused to intervene in the lawsuit, allowing the case to proceed toward trial. The NFL attempted to push the case to arbitration rather than an open court, but Justice Brett Kavanaugh decided not to hear the case. 

Flores' attorneys released a statement following the ruling. 

"The NFL must now accept that its commissioner cannot be the arbitrator over discrimination claims against the league and its teams. We look forward to litigating these claims in court," the statement read. 

Flores is a brilliant defensive mind who got his start in the NFL under legendary New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. He spent 15 seasons on Belichick's staff and won four Super Bowls. 

The major inciting event in Flores' legal battle with the NFL came when his good friend Belichick sent him an "accidental" text congratulating him on being named the New York Giants head coach before he was given an interview. 

The text from Belichick seemed to have confirmed that the Giants had decided to hire head coach Brian Daboll before interviewing Flores, thus not satisfying the Rooney Rule, implemented in 2003. 

Some believe Belichick purposefully tipped off his friend with the premature text message in an attempt to expose the botched hiring process.
