Max Fried’s Tommy John surgeon weighs in on Yankees’ elbow bruise diagnosis

NEW YORK Yankees left-hander Max Fried’s first response to Friday’s diagnosis of an elbow bruise was to get a second opinion from the surgeon that performed his Tommy John surgery in 2014.

A day later, Dr. Neal ElAttrache concurred with Yankees head physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

This confirmed that Fried’s ligament is intact and his injury won’t require a season-ending surgery.

Fried and the Yankees haven’t given even a ballpark timeline for a return, but the three-time All-Star is expected to be sidelined at least a month.

For Monday’s game versus the Blue Jays, Yankees -1.5 runline is currently sitting at +119 on DraftKings. Our comprehensive DraftKings Sportsbook review shows you how to sign up and use their app.

He’ll be in a no-throw program for a few weeks or until his elbow “banging” is asymptomatic. The issue forced Fried out of his start last Wednesday in Baltimore after three innings and 62 pitches.

“I’m definitely bummed that I’m going to have to be missing some time, but overall happy that it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be anything serious,” Fried said Friday. “There’s no surgery required or anything like that. I never want to go on the IL and miss games, but I also understand that the long-term outlook still looks good.”

Fried has a 4-3 record and 3.21 ERA in 10 starts this season, but allowed 11 runs over 14 1/3 innings in three May starts.

On Saturday, the Yankees placed Fried on the 15-day injured list and called up rookie right-hander Elmer Rodriguez, who will start Sunday against the Mets at Citi Field.

Rodriguez was up from Triple-A earlier this season to make two starts. Facing the Rangers twice, he was 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA, five strikeouts, eight walks and two hit batters over 8 2/3 innings.
