Mets Secure Crucial Victory Over Braves with Devin Williams' Four-Out Save
The New York Mets clinched a significant 7-5 victory against the Atlanta Braves, leaders in the NL East, in a tightly contested game on Friday night, thanks in no small part to closer Devin Williams. Bo Bichette led the charge for the Mets, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs, while Nolan McLean struggled to maintain control, leading to some late-game tension as Atlanta's powerful lineup threatened to close the gap.
With two outs in the eighth and runners positioned on second and third, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza made the decision to call upon Williams to secure a four-out save. This marked a notable moment for both the manager and the pitcher, as Williams had not previously exceeded three outs in a game since joining the Mets. Mendoza explained his reasoning, stating, "We got to a point now where they’re built up, equipped for it. Once you get in that situation, you’re trying to avoid another high-leverage guy, which was [Luke Weaver].”
Williams faced immediate pressure as Eli White hit a single that brought in a run. However, he managed to retire Rowdy Tellez, who represented the potential go-ahead run, ending the eighth inning. In the ninth, Williams quickly recorded an out against Austin Wynns but faced a challenge when Mauricio Dubon engaged him in a grueling 14-pitch at-bat that ended with a single, putting the tying run at the plate.
Despite the pressure, Williams remained composed, striking out Michael Harris II and then fanning Matt Olson, who had previously hit a home run in the game, to secure the win. Mendoza praised Williams' ability to thrive under pressure, stating, "Pretty impressive at-bat by Dubon there, but that’s what makes Devin who he is." He added that Williams demonstrated the skill to stay aggressive and execute his pitches effectively.
This marked Williams' sixth career save involving four or more outs and his first since May 28, 2023. Over his last six appearances, he has surrendered just one run across 6.1 innings, and he has not allowed a run in 15 of his last 17 outings dating back to April 26. With 37 strikeouts this season, he ranks seventh among NL relievers. While Williams may not be available for Saturday's game, his performance set a positive tone for the Mets as they seek to recover from a challenging start to the season.
