Mets Suffer Second Consecutive Defeat to Cardinals, 9-2

The New York Mets faced another tough loss on Wednesday night, succumbing to the St. Louis Cardinals 9-2 at Citi Field. This defeat marks the second consecutive night the Mets have been overwhelmed, with the Cardinals outscoring them 16-2 over the two games in this six-game homestand.

The Mets’ batting lineup has struggled significantly, managing only eight hits across the two contests against St. Louis, including just three hits in Wednesday's game. Although they placed runners in scoring position six times, they were unable to capitalize, finishing 0-for-6 in those critical moments. The lone highlight came from Francisco Alvarez, who smashed a two-run homer in the third inning, reducing the Cardinals' lead to 7-2. This was Alvarez's second game back after recovering from meniscus surgery.

Noteworthy was the performance of rookie A.J. Ewing, who walked ahead of Alvarez's home run, showcasing his growing ability to handle counts and avoid difficult pitches. On the pitching side, Cardinals' right-hander Andre Pallante effectively limited the Mets' offense, allowing just three hits through six innings. Despite having a higher ERA in the first inning this season, the Mets failed to take advantage, going down in order during their first at-bat.

Jonathan Pintaro made a solid relief appearance for the Mets, allowing only one hit and one run over three innings. However, David Peterson's outing as a bulk reliever was less successful, as he surrendered six runs in 3.2 innings, including a damaging three-run homer to Jordan Walker. Peterson, who had previously excelled in relief with a 1.88 ERA, struggled significantly in this game, yielding seven hits and two walks.

Looking ahead, the Mets are eager to salvage a win in their series against the Cardinals as they prepare for Thursday's afternoon game, where Christian Scott (2-0, 2.50 ERA) is set to take the mound against Hunter Dobbins.
