Michigan State lands commitment from defensive end Jack Schuler

To borrow from Tom Izzo, coach Pat Fitzgerald found an OKG – “our kinda guy.”

An early-riser who woke up with Michigan State football on his mind.

Bishop Watterson's Jack Schuler (87) celebrates in the first half of the OHSAA Region 11 championship game at White Field on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025 in Newark, Ohio.

The Spartans landed a commitment from defensive end Jack Schuler just before daybreak on Thursday, April, 30. The three-star edge rusher from Bishop Watterson in Columbus, Ohio, picked MSU over offers from Marshall, Liberty, Connecticut and a number of Mid-American Conference schools, including Central Michigan.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Schuler registered 84 tackles, 20 of them for a loss, and nine sacks in 2025 and also plays basketball for the Eagles. He is ranked the No. 1,034 overall player and 79th-best edge rusher nationally and is rated No. 39 in Ohio for 2027 according to 247Sports.com's composite rankings.

Bishop Watterson's Jack Schuler (87) celebrates after defeating Big Walnut at Ohio Dominican University on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025 in Columbus, Ohio.

Schuler is the Spartans’ seventh pledge for their 2027 class, Fitzgerald’s first full recruiting cycle since being hired Dec. 1 to replace Jonathan Smith. Fitzgerald had his team go through early morning spring practices last month, with players waking up around the same time that Schuler announced his commitment at 4:51 a.m. Thursday.
