Mid Valley Spartans Exit PIAA Class 4A Playoffs After Loss to Holy Ghost Prep

CENTER VALLEY — The Mid Valley Spartans showcased their fighting spirit in the PIAA Class 4A baseball playoffs, but their journey came to a close in the quarterfinals against District 1 champion Holy Ghost Prep. Despite a strong comeback effort, the Spartans fell short, losing 6-2 at Butz Field in DeSales University on Thursday.

After previously overcoming a four-run deficit in their playoff opener, the Spartans faced a challenging situation when they trailed by five runs early in the game. Freshman pitcher Nick Hricenak kept the team competitive, working diligently on the mound while the Mid Valley offense fought back with key plays. Jeremy Cali was a standout, reaching base three times and contributing two RBIs to narrow the gap to three runs.

“That’s just kind of how our team’s been all year long,” said Mid Valley head coach Ryan Kropa. “We used that word resilient over and over again, and just watching these guys ride the ups and downs together, never die, never quit.” Kropa reflected on the season's challenges, including injuries that tested the team's depth. “The resiliency and that next-man-up mentality is what brought us here to be one of the eight best teams in 4A in the state of Pennsylvania, and that’s pretty impressive.”

Holy Ghost Prep, boasting a roster with 17 seniors, will advance to face District 4 champion Montoursville in the semifinals. Coach Greg Olenski noted the competitiveness of both teams, praising Hricenak's performance despite the loss. “He was pretty sharp on the mound, even after we went up 5-0,” Olenski remarked.

The Firebirds made an early statement with a strong offensive showing, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding to their lead in subsequent frames. Despite their efforts, the Spartans remained determined and fought until the final out, showcasing their tenacity throughout the game.
