Milwaukee Dominates UCF in NCAA Baseball Tournament Opener

In a commanding display during their NCAA tournament debut, Milwaukee showcased that their explosive performance was no mere coincidence, overpowering UCF 13-6 in the Auburn Regional on May 30. The Panthers, champions of the Horizon League, capitalized on five walks and recorded five extra-base hits, building an insurmountable lead at Plainsman Park. With this victory, Milwaukee (27-31) is now poised to become only the 10th No. 4 seed in NCAA baseball history to progress to the supers.

UCF (32-22) now faces a critical matchup against Auburn (39-20) at 3 p.m. on Sunday, where they must win to stay in the tournament. The winner of that game will have to defeat Milwaukee twice later that evening to continue their championship hopes. Milwaukee's recent form has been impressive, with this win marking their 22nd victory in the last 30 games, following an earlier shock against Auburn.

Andrew Williamson ignited the Panthers' offense with a massive 443-foot home run in the sixth inning, clocking an exit velocity of 110 mph. Meanwhile, UCF's Evan Jones attempted to rally his team with a career-best 4⅓ innings of two-run relief pitching. However, the day belonged to Milwaukee, whose top hitters proved too much for UCF's pitching staff.

Grant Ross, Milwaukee’s leadoff hitter, made an impact by reaching base in all five of his at-bats, including a quirky solo home run that deflected off UCF's center fielder. "We're just gritty, man. We're grinding it out," Ross remarked after the game. His teammate Charlie Marion also contributed significantly, reaching base multiple times and scoring twice. UCF’s Mateo Gray struggled on the mound, leading to a quick exit after just 1⅓ innings.

The game experienced a brief interruption when home plate umpire Blake Felix was struck in the face mask by a foul ball. After being evaluated for a concussion, he did not return, prompting a change in officiating behind the plate.

Now, UCF stands on the brink of elimination and must overcome the fourth-ranked Auburn to sustain their tournament aspirations. Auburn demonstrated their offensive prowess earlier by eliminating NC State in a high-scoring 17-13 clash, showcasing their lineup's depth with multiple players contributing significantly. Historically, UCF holds a 5-6 record against the Tigers, having previously swept them during the shortened 2020 season.
