MLB Suspends Padres' Ron Marinaccio for Three Games Following HBP Incident
Major League Baseball has imposed penalties on the San Diego Padres stemming from a heated situation during their June 13 game against the Baltimore Orioles, which the Padres won 9-3. The league's senior vice president of On-Field Operations, Michael Hill, announced on June 15 that pitcher Ron Marinaccio has been suspended for three games for intentionally hitting Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson with a pitch in the ninth inning.
Marinaccio's actions resulted in his ejection from the game as he struck Henderson with two outs remaining while the Padres held a commanding lead. This incident occurred shortly after Orioles pitcher Trey Gibson had thrown a pitch that struck Padres infielder Xander Bogaerts in the head earlier in the game, suggesting a potential retaliation by the Padres.
In addition to Marinaccio’s suspension, Padres manager Craig Stammen also faced league discipline. Following his pitcher's ejection, Stammen engaged in a lengthy and heated exchange with the umpires, which ultimately led to his own ejection. MLB has suspended him for one game and imposed a fine, although the exact amounts were not disclosed. Stammen's suspension will take effect during the Padres' game against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 15.
In a bid to contest his suspension, Marinaccio has opted to file an appeal. His suspension was initially set to begin with the Cardinals matchup, but it will now be deferred until the appeal process is resolved.
