Morris Knolls Softball Claims State Group 4 Championship with Dominant Win Over Kingsway

NEWARK – The Morris Knolls softball team showcased their prowess in a thrilling performance, defeating Kingsway 14-0 to secure the state Group 4 title, marking their first championship win in 16 years on Friday night at Ivy Hill Park. Despite a heavy rainstorm that interrupted play, the Golden Eagles maintained their momentum to clinch the victory.

With a final record of 29-3, Morris Knolls had previously faced heartbreak in the state finals in 2023 and 2024. This time, they celebrated a triumphant finish. “Knowing we’ve been here two times and finally being able to put it all together in the end, it’s just crazy, what a way to finish our senior year,” remarked senior Anna Chominsky.

The Golden Eagles exploded for eight runs in the first two innings before a 30-minute rain delay halted the game. They amassed 12 hits, including five extra-base hits, with senior Julia Fox leading the charge with three hits and four RBIs, nearly completing the cycle with a two-run homer in the second inning. Chominsky also contributed significantly, hitting a two-run double in the first and a single in the second, bringing her season total to 27 RBIs.

Following the delay, Morris Knolls added a run in the third inning and five more in the fifth, ultimately winning the game via the mercy rule. Throughout the postseason, the Golden Eagles demonstrated their offensive strength, scoring 57 runs over six games.

“We’re good offensively, one through nine (in the lineup), we’re pretty relentless,” said head coach Keith Heinemann. “We grind on pitchers and defenses.” Kingsway struggled to keep pace, with senior Karsen Taylor acknowledging, “I don’t think we’ve ever faced a lineup like that. They were really smashing the ball.”

On the other hand, Kingsway, under first-year coach Diane Nelson, ended their season with a commendable 21-6 record, including a Tri-County Conference Royal Division title. Nelson praised her players' efforts, stating, “It was an amazing run, I’m just so happy for the kids.” Despite the loss, the team reflected on their journey with pride, emphasizing their strong chemistry and resilience.
