NBA Declines to Upgrade Wembanyama’s Missed Foul to Flagrant Status
The NBA acknowledged on Tuesday that officials overlooked a foul committed by Victor Wembanyama during the first quarter of Game 3 in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. However, the league has decided against classifying the incident as a flagrant foul.
In a review following San Antonio's 115-111 victory at Madison Square Garden, a source informed USA TODAY Sports' Lorenzo Reyes that the league would not enhance the call. This decision comes despite NBA officiating head Monty McCutchen admitting on ESPN that the referees erred in judgment. Wembanyama shoved Jalen Brunson with both hands as the Knicks guard attempted to set a screen, prompting a strong reaction from the Madison Square Garden crowd, though no foul was called at the time.
McCutchen spoke about the missed call during an appearance on ESPN's "NBA Today," stating, “Well most certainly, I think we can all agree that a foul was missed on that play.” He emphasized the importance of effective communication among referees during on-ball and off-ball exchanges, noting that a breakdown in their fundamentals led to this oversight.
Despite replays indicating that Brunson may have pulled on Wembanyama’s jersey prior to the shove, the league chose not to act on the incident. Wembanyama's aggressive push placed him at two flagrant foul points for the playoffs, stemming from a previous Flagrant 2 ejection against Minnesota. Had the shove been deemed a Flagrant 1, he would have reached three points, one away from an automatic suspension.
The Knicks took note of the inconsistency in officiating, particularly when Brunson was assessed a Flagrant 1 for a later incident in the third quarter, allowing the Spurs to capitalize with a four-point play. Knicks coach Mike Brown expressed his disbelief at the disparity in free throw attempts, with San Antonio receiving 24 compared to New York's eight in the second half. The Knicks currently lead the series 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled for Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
