NBA Icon Reggie Miller Encourages Chet Holmgren to Overcome Challenges and Build Resilience
The Oklahoma City Thunder faces important decisions this offseason as they look to strengthen their roster following a tough elimination by the San Antonio Spurs and their standout player, Victor Wembanyama. Chet Holmgren, the second overall pick in the 2022 draft, has become the subject of trade rumors after a disappointing performance in Game 7, where he managed just four points on two attempts. While some speculate that trading Holmgren could bring in a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo to counter Wembanyama, it seems the Thunder are committed to keeping their young center.
Support for Holmgren has been strong from both teammates and coaching staff. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been named league MVP, emphasized Holmgren’s vital role in the team’s future success. Gilgeous-Alexander praised Holmgren’s versatility and contributions towards the Thunder’s aspirations for a championship. Head coach Mark Daigneault echoed this sentiment, highlighting Holmgren's significance as a core member of the team, stating that their recent success would not have been achievable without him.
Since Holmgren returned from a foot injury that sidelined him for the entire 2022-23 season, the Thunder have established themselves as one of the top teams in the Western Conference. However, the pressure is on Holmgren to perform, particularly after his lackluster showing in the playoffs.
Reggie Miller, a legendary figure in the NBA, recently shared his thoughts on Holmgren’s situation during a commentary appearance. Reflecting on his own struggles in the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals, where he felt he underperformed, Miller encouraged Holmgren to harness the criticism he has faced. “He’s going to have to reinvent himself and he’s going to have to use what everyone is saying about him. ‘He too soft’. ‘There were fear in his eyes,’” Miller stated on the Dan Patrick Show.
While Miller believes Holmgren is too valuable for the Thunder to trade, he noted that the upcoming season will provide the young player with another chance to prove himself against Wembanyama. “He gotta work on his game. He gotta work on his strength and mentally, he’s gotta be stronger,” Miller advised, highlighting the importance of resilience for Holmgren’s development.
