NBA Official Discusses Standards for Reviewing Foul Calls
In a recent interview on NBA Today, referee Mike McCutchen addressed the process of reviewing foul calls, particularly in light of a controversial play involving Victor Wembanyama. McCutchen confirmed that Wembanyama did indeed commit a foul during the game and elaborated on how the league reviews each contest after it concludes.
McCutchen stated, “Every game is reviewed by the league office postgame, the entirety of the game, and we're in the process of doing that today.” He emphasized that while reviews are important, there is a significant respect given to the judgment of on-court officials. “They're the ones feeling the moments. They're the ones that are involved in the up and down of the game,” he explained.
He further clarified the criteria for altering a call after the fact, indicating that a “clear miss” could warrant an upgrade. However, he stressed that the standard for such changes is “clear and conclusive,” distinguishing it from merely re-refereeing the game.
This discussion comes as part of ongoing efforts within the NBA to improve the accuracy and fairness of officiating, a topic that has garnered much attention from players and fans alike.
