NC State Baseball Coach Elliott Avent's Career Concludes with Controversial Pitch Clock Violation
Elliott Avent, who has led the NC State baseball team since 1997 and has been involved in college baseball since 1981, saw his storied career come to a close on Saturday. The Wolfpack were eliminated from the NCAA regionals following a 17-13 defeat to the No. 4 ranked Auburn, marking an intense end to the double-elimination tournament.
NC State entered the game after a tough 9-3 loss to UCF on Friday, but the final match concluded in a far more dramatic fashion. The pivotal moment came when freshman Christian Serrano, after working the count full against Auburn’s Jackson Sanders, was penalized for a pitch clock violation. This delay resulted in a strikeout, ending the game, the season, and Avent’s long coaching career.
The 70-year-old coach expressed his frustration by confronting the umpires following the call, ultimately throwing his cap in anger as he acknowledged Auburn’s dugout. Avent had announced his retirement last week, ending a remarkable tenure as the program’s all-time winningest coach at his alma mater, located in Raleigh.
The game began with Auburn establishing a commanding 8-0 lead in the first inning and extending it to 10-0 by the second. Although NC State fought back, narrowing the score to 10-7 in the fourth inning, Auburn retaliated with seven additional runs. Despite NC State scoring six late runs in the sixth and seventh innings, neither team managed to score in the final frames.
Auburn, having suffered a surprising defeat to Milwaukee in their tournament opener, will now face either a rematch against that team or UCF on Sunday to determine which team advances to the super regionals.
