NCAA Appeals Ruling on Brendan Sorsby’s Eligibility to Texas Court
The NCAA has formally appealed a Texas court's decision regarding the eligibility of Brendan Sorsby, a former Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback currently playing for Texas Tech. This appeal was filed on June 8, following a ruling by Judge Ken Curry that blocked the NCAA from declaring Sorsby ineligible.
The NCAA's appeal is classified as "accelerated" and will be heard by the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas. The implications of this case are significant, as athletic directors from various institutions are reportedly reconsidering their matchups with Texas Tech. According to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, both Georgia and Nebraska have advised their coaches against scheduling games with the Red Raiders.
Sorsby, who previously played for the Bearcats after transferring from Indiana University, opted for Texas Tech over LSU after his time at UC. The Bearcats are slated to compete against the Red Raiders during their Homecoming game in October at Nippert Stadium.
The NCAA had previously ruled Sorsby ineligible and denied his request for reinstatement. His legal team is currently pursuing a temporary injunction to permit him to participate with Texas Tech for the 2026 season. It has been reported that Sorsby engaged in gambling activities involving Indiana football, placing over 40 bets worth approximately $90,000 and utilizing accounts registered to family members and friends.
In a related note, Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken expressed on June 2 that he would be hesitant to consider Sorsby for the NFL's supplemental draft if he remains ineligible to compete at the college level.
