Nelson Powers Avengers to Game 1 Victory in D-II Baseball Championship

In a commanding performance, Anders Nelson led the top-seeded East Greenwich Avengers to a decisive 6-1 victory over the West Warwick Wizards in Game 1 of the Division II baseball championship series on Saturday at Rhode Island College. With this win, the Avengers are now just one victory away from claiming the title.

West Warwick initially took the lead, scoring their only run in the second inning when Charles Brown's single brought home Kole Kilduff. However, the Avengers quickly responded, exploding for four runs in the bottom of the same inning. Nelson’s bases-loaded double was pivotal, driving in two runs, while another two runs crossed the plate due to a fielding error on a ground ball hit by Tyler Nuti. Nuti finished the game with three RBIs, while Nelson contributed two.

In addition to their offensive highlights, the Avengers showcased a strong performance on the mound. Nelson struck out ten batters and allowed just one run over his time on the hill. Aayan Modi also made a notable contribution, throwing an inning and a third of scoreless relief to secure the win.

The two teams will face off again on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., as East Greenwich looks to clinch the championship in this best-of-three series.
