NFC West Teams Eye Final Roster Adjustments Before Training Camp

With offseason training programs concluded, NFL teams are now gearing up for the commencement of training camp. While most rosters are close to being finalized, there remains a possibility for trades, cuts, and contract extensions as teams determine their final 53-man lineups. Aaron Schatz has proposed some crucial last-minute adjustments for the NFC West teams.

For the Arizona Cardinals, a potential trade involving defensive end Josh Sweat could yield significant future draft capital, particularly if they can secure a high pick in 2027. Despite his value, trading Sweat now may not be wise, given his status as the team's only reliable pass rusher. The Cardinals could be at a disadvantage without him, even if their overall outlook appears bleak.

As for the Los Angeles Rams, extending offensive lineman Kevin Dotson stands out as a strategic move. With both starting guards poised to enter free agency after this season, retaining Dotson, who boasts superior performance metrics compared to left guard Steve Avila, would simplify their search for new talent. At 30 years old, Dotson is still among the league's top guards, making his extension a sensible move as the Rams continue to chase championship aspirations.

The situation surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is also in need of resolution. Aiyuk appears to be pushing for a release, while the 49ers hope a trade can be arranged. Should Aiyuk depart, there’s speculation he could reunite with former Arizona State teammate Jayden Daniels in Washington. The 49ers have options to keep Aiyuk off the field through various roster designations, but the uncertainty surrounding his status needs clarification before the start of camp.

Finally, the Seattle Seahawks face a decision regarding defensive lineman Leonard Williams. Although he will turn 32 this season, Williams has displayed impressive performance, including seven sacks last year and a second-team All-Pro selection in 2025. With 66.6% of his pass-rush snaps drawing double teams, retaining him for another couple of seasons could be pivotal for Seattle's championship hopes. Letting him leave could be a mistake, especially if he continues to perform at a high level.
