NFL Insider Predicts Quick Contract Extension for Lions' Sam LaPorta

Following a promising injury update regarding tight end Sam LaPorta, NFL expert Ian Rapoport expressed optimism about a potential contract extension with the Detroit Lions. Coach Dan Campbell, while not making any definitive statements, conveyed a positive outlook for LaPorta's readiness for training camp at the end of next month. "We like where he's going. He's trending the right way," Campbell remarked during the Lions' minicamp on Tuesday.

Rapoport shared his insights on NFL Network's "The Insiders," suggesting that LaPorta's recovery trajectory could pave the way for a contract extension before the upcoming season. "Two parts to this here: First of all, the fact that Dan Campbell would say that, 'trending in the right direction...' To speak Dan Campbell, that means he's likely ready for training camp and is certainly going to be ready for the start of the 2026 season. That is excellent news," he stated.

Recognized as one of the premier tight ends in the league, LaPorta is seen as a priority for the Lions in terms of contract negotiations. Rapoport speculated that both LaPorta and Green Bay Packers' Tucker Kraft could redefine the tight end market ahead of the next season. Currently, George Kittle and Trey McBride lead the NFL with average annual salaries of $19.1 million and $19 million, respectively.

According to Spotrac, LaPorta's projected market value stands at an average annual salary of $18.4 million, anticipated over a four-year, $73.6 million extension. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end had an impressive rookie season in 2023, amassing 889 yards and 10 touchdowns on 86 receptions, earning Pro Bowl honors and second-team All-Pro status. He followed up with notable performances in subsequent seasons, including 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, and 40 receptions for 489 yards and three scores in just nine games last year.
