NHL Playoff Viewership Soars Ahead of Stanley Cup Final

The NHL is experiencing a significant boost in viewership as it approaches the Stanley Cup Final. The league's conference finals have shown remarkable increases, with both ESPN and TNT reporting near 50% growth in audience numbers compared to the previous year. The Western Conference Finals, featuring a sweep by the Vegas Golden Knights over the Colorado Avalanche, drew an average of 2.2 million viewers on ESPN, marking a 44% rise from last year's series between the Oilers and Stars, which extended to five games.

On the other side, the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Carolina Hurricanes faced the Montreal Canadiens, averaged 2 million viewers across its first four games on TNT Sports, reflecting a 49% increase from the previous year's matchup involving the Panthers and Hurricanes. While the viewership figures for Game 5, which confirmed the Hurricanes' place in the Stanley Cup Final, are still pending, the overall trend has been impressive.

This year's postseason has seen a 68% increase in first-round viewership year-over-year, averaging 1.2 million viewers per game, while the second round saw a 55% jump, averaging 1.9 million viewers. With these numbers, anticipation is high for the upcoming Stanley Cup Final between the Golden Knights and the Hurricanes, which is expected to attract strong ratings.

One factor contributing to this optimism is the return of the Cup Final to broadcast television, shifting from TNT to ABC, where past finals have garnered better ratings. Last year's final on TNT averaged only 2.5 million viewers, a significant drop of 40% from the 2024 championship aired on ABC. Additionally, this year's matchup features two non-Canadian teams for the first time since 2023, which should help bolster viewership in the U.S.

The surge in interest for the NHL can be partly attributed to the excitement generated during the U.S. gold medal campaign at February's Winter Olympics, which has translated into heightened engagement with the league's broadcasts. Although this final may not feature the most high-profile teams or markets, the ongoing post-Olympic momentum suggests that viewership will remain strong.
