Nikita Kucherov Claims Hart Trophy in Nail-Biting MVP Race

Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning has been honored with the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player for the 2025-26 season, edging out formidable contenders Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon in a remarkably close voting outcome. This marks Kucherov's second time receiving the accolade, having previously won in the 2018-19 season.

In the final tallies, Kucherov garnered 1,436 points and secured 72 first-place votes, narrowly surpassing McDavid, who achieved 1,426 points and 68 first-place nods. MacKinnon followed closely behind with 1,297 points and 52 first-place votes. This tight competition represents the closest Hart Trophy vote since the 2001-02 season when José Théodore and Jarome Iginla were tied on points, with Théodore ultimately winning due to a slight edge in first-place votes.

This year's voting also set a new precedent, as it marked the first occasion in three decades of the current voting format that three players earned at least 25% of the first-place votes. The fourth position went to 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks, who is poised for a bright future in the league. Canadiens center Nick Suzuki received the only other first-place vote, totaling just one.

Despite Kucherov's impressive performance, tallying 44 goals and 86 assists to lead the Lightning to a 50-26-6 record, the team faced disappointment in the playoffs, suffering a first-round exit against the Montreal Canadiens in a seven-game series. Kucherov contributed one goal and five assists in that matchup but did not register a point in the final three games.

In addition to Kucherov's recognition, the Lightning celebrated further achievements with Andrei Vasilevskiy winning the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and Jon Cooper receiving the Jack Adams Award for best coach.
