NorthWood Panthers Advance to Semistate Championship with 3-0 Victory over Norwell

LAPORTE — In a crucial semistate semifinal matchup, the NorthWood Panthers secured a vital 3-0 victory against Norwell at Schreiber Field on Saturday, solidifying their place in the Class 3A championship game. The pivotal moment came in the bottom of the fourth inning when NorthWood junior pitcher Finley Miller faced a bases-loaded situation with only one out, forcing a strategic mound visit from his head coach, Zach Benko.

As the tension mounted with the Panthers holding a slim 1-0 lead, Benko recalled the team's preparations. “We had film, and we had seen them do some squeezing in bases-loaded situations in previous games,” he explained. A high fastball was thrown to Norwell's Trey Privett, who attempted to bunt. However, NorthWood catcher Ryder Ransberger made a spectacular catch, preventing a run and marking the second out of the inning. Miller then secured his sixth strikeout, escaping the jam unscathed.

NorthWood, now boasting a record of 19-12-1, will face off against top-ranked Andrean (29-3) for the Class 3A semistate title at 7 p.m. CT. This matchup follows last season's tense encounter where NorthWood bested Norwell 3-1 before falling to Andrean in the finals. Andrean, having already clinched a spot in the Class 4A next season, defeated DeKalb 2-0 in the other semifinal.

Despite being out-hit 4-3 by Norwell, the Panthers’ defense remained impenetrable. Miller, a transfer from Wawasee, pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. “He was changing speeds, stayed within himself, and did a nice job finding spots,” Benko praised.

NorthWood's offense ignited in the sixth inning, building on their 1-0 lead. After a leadoff walk to Miller, Ransberger doubled down the left field line, scoring Miller. An error by Norwell's defense allowed Jett Rulli to score, extending the lead to 3-0. Ransberger summarized his approach, stating, “I was trying to just hit the ball hard.”

In the seventh inning, Miller faced a brief scare after allowing a single but quickly regained his composure, sealing the game with a lineout and a strikeout followed by an infield pop-up for the final out.
