Oklahoma Stuns Georgia Tech, Sets Up Winner-Take-All Showdown
In a thrilling showdown, Oklahoma overcame a significant deficit to defeat #2 Georgia Tech 15-8, prompting a decisive game on Monday for a spot in the Super Regionals. This marks the first regional final appearance for Georgia Tech since 2019, and the stakes were high as they sought to advance.
Georgia Tech started strong, with Carson Kerce earning a walk followed by a two-run homer from Burress, marking his 15th home run of the season and 59th of his career. However, Oklahoma quickly leveled the score thanks to Brendan Brock’s two-run shot. The Yellow Jackets responded with a five-run inning in the third, bolstered by Alex Hernandez's fourth home run of the weekend, which gave them a lead of 7-2.
But the tide turned drastically in the fourth inning. Oklahoma unleashed an offensive barrage, scoring eight runs, including a grand slam from Deitan Lachance that flipped the game on its head, leading 10-8. Despite a pitching change, Georgia Tech’s bullpen struggled to contain the relentless Oklahoma hitters, who added more runs late in the game.
As the game progressed, Oklahoma continued to widen the gap, scoring five more runs between the seventh and eighth innings. The Yellow Jackets, despite their earlier success at the plate, faltered in the latter stages and were unable to score again, sealing their fate.
With this victory, Oklahoma has set the stage for a crucial rematch with Georgia Tech, where both teams will vie for a chance to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
