Orioles’ Offensive Woes and Defensive Mistakes Lead to Loss Against Padres

The Baltimore Orioles missed a crucial opportunity to gain momentum as they faced off against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Instead of capitalizing on their recent successes, they stumbled, ending their homestand with a disappointing 5-2 defeat.

In recent weeks, the Orioles had showcased some of their best performances of the season. However, after suffering two consecutive losses, the team’s longstanding offensive issues reared their head once again. In their last pair of games, the Orioles managed a dismal 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position, a statistic that highlights their struggles at critical moments.

Trevor Rogers delivered a commendable performance, arguably his best in over two months, pitching six innings while allowing just two runs. Despite a tough break in the second inning when a ground ball hit the second base bag and led to a Padres run, Rogers bounced back, striking out four and allowing five hits overall. Unfortunately for him, the lack of offensive support meant he was handed the loss, marking his first quality start since April 7.

As the game progressed, Baltimore briefly narrowed San Diego's lead in the fifth inning with a solo home run from Jeremiah Jackson. However, a missed chance in the sixth inning proved detrimental, as both Colton Cowser and Jackson Holliday struck out with runners in scoring position. The Padres capitalized on this, with catcher Rodolfo Durán hitting a two-run homer shortly after, extending their lead to 4-1.

In a chaotic ninth inning, Baltimore's defense faltered, committing three errors that allowed the Padres to score again and effectively seal the game. Manager Craig Albernaz expressed his frustration over the sloppy play, stating, “Very, especially when you know Mason Miller is on the mound already, and it’s a two-run game that you want to just get back in the dugout. Those three errors, they hurt us."

With this loss, the Orioles wrap up a challenging week, having dropped two straight after a three-game winning streak. They are set to face the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, marking the start of a three-game series.
