Orioles Rally Late to Edge Blue Jays 6-5

BALTIMORE (AP) — In a thrilling comeback, the Baltimore Orioles pulled off a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, scoring five runs in the ninth inning. Pete Alonso delivered the decisive blow, hitting a single with the bases loaded to cap off the Orioles' impressive rally.

Despite struggling for the majority of the game, managing only three hits and hitting into four double plays, the Orioles came alive in the final frame. The ninth began with designated hitter Samuel Basallo grimacing and heading to the dugout after striking out. However, Coby Mayo was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for a surge that included a triple by Leody Taveras, which brought in Mayo.

Jackson Holliday followed with a single, narrowing the gap to 5-3. Blue Jays pitcher Jeff Hoffman (4-4) then surrendered a double to Colton Cowser, and a four-pitch walk to Taylor Ward loaded the bases. Gunnar Henderson's walk brought in another run, leading to Hoffman's exit. Adley Rutschman walked against Connor Seabold, tying the game before Alonso's winning hit.

On the mound, Albert Suárez (2-0) allowed an unearned run in the ninth while the Toronto starter, Trey Yesavage, navigated through seven walks to finish with only one run allowed in five innings—a feat not seen since current Oriole Chris Bassitt's seven walks in September 2024.

Looking ahead, Toronto planned to start an opener followed by right-hander Spencer Miles (2-0, 2.16 ERA) in the series finale on Sunday. The Orioles were set to counter with right-hander Kyle Bradish (2-6, 3.86).
