Over 400 Arrested in France Following Chaotic Champions League Celebrations
Following Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final, more than 400 individuals were detained across France due to violent clashes between fans and law enforcement. The win, secured through a penalty shootout, ignited celebrations that quickly escalated into unrest, prompting the deployment of thousands of police officers to manage the situation.
In Paris, the atmosphere turned chaotic as fans set off fireworks and flares, resulting in injuries to several police officers. Authorities responded by using tear gas to disperse the crowds that had gathered in the city center. The Champs-Élysées became a focal point for celebrations, though it was also the site of significant disturbances, including damage to property and vehicles.
According to France's interior ministry, 416 arrests were made in the early hours of Sunday, with 280 of those occurring in Paris alone. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the violence, stating that it was "absolutely unacceptable." In a reaction on social media, far-right leader Marine Le Pen remarked, "Only in France does a football club's victory spark riots."
This year's celebrations were especially poignant as they followed a similar pattern of violence after PSG's victory the previous year, which resulted in two fatalities, including that of a 17-year-old boy. As the team prepares for a victory parade on Sunday, which includes a route near the Eiffel Tower, the city remains tense in the wake of the unrest.
