Recent years have seen significant upheaval in conference memberships, and while this article isn’t about impending changes, it is a timely discussion on the Pac-12, often dubbed the “Conference of Champions.” After losing most of its teams, the Pac-12 is set for a revival with a new lineup this upcoming season.
Returning to the Pac-12 are Washington State and Oregon State, who have spent the last two seasons in the West Coast Conference (WCC). They will be joined by newcomers from the Mountain West, including Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State. Additionally, Texas State will transition from the Sun Belt, while Gonzaga shifts from the WCC.
This raises a pertinent question: With these Mid-Major teams entering the Pac-12, will the conference itself take on a mid-major identity? A critical point to consider is that Gonzaga is unlikely to be classified as a mid-major, regardless of this transition.
The Mountain West has established itself as a strong mid-major conference, especially with San Diego State's recent run to the 2023 Final Four and Utah State's consistent success. However, the new Pac-12's composition still includes teams like Washington State and Oregon State, whose performances in the WCC were less than stellar. For instance, the Cougar men’s team recorded a combined 15-21 record, while Texas State has only made two NCAA Tournament appearances in its history without a victory.
Ultimately, the forthcoming season will reveal how this new configuration impacts the Pac-12's standing in college sports. Fans are encouraged to share their thoughts through the survey.
