Pacers Prioritize Core Stability Over Draft Pick in Zubac Trade
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers have expressed a strong desire to retain their top-four protected first-round pick this offseason, a sentiment that remains even after a tough draft lottery outcome. However, their enthusiasm for new acquisition Ivica Zubac, an All-Defense team member in 2025, outweighs the loss of that draft pick, as he was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Pacers back in February. General manager Chad Buchanan emphasized Zubac as the team’s primary target shortly after the trade announcement.
Buchanan stated, “We like (Zubac), we like his fit, like his age, like his production, like his character, his locker room culture, all of the above,” highlighting the qualities that make Zubac a valuable addition. His defensive skills and rebounding ability are seen as vital components for a team aiming for success in the near future. Although Zubac participated in only five games for the Pacers this season due to injuries, he managed to average 11.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during that time.
Next season, the Pacers are eager to integrate Zubac with their star players, Pascal Siakam and Tyrese Haliburton, having only seen him briefly alongside other starters like Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith. The Pacers have focused on Zubac’s playing ability as a key reason for pursuing him, a sentiment echoed by multiple executives within the organization. In a recent radio interview, Buchanan reiterated the importance of Zubac's contract, which is under $22 million for the next two seasons, offering value in a league increasingly influenced by salary cap dynamics.
The Pacers' decision to trade for Zubac was driven by the need for a high-level center without sacrificing their core talent. Buchanan noted, “We’re still excited about this group. Nothing’s changed,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining their top players. Team President Kevin Pritchard hinted at the necessity of avoiding trades involving core members during the recent NBA Draft Lottery, indicating the team’s commitment to its current roster structure.
With Zubac joining the ranks, the Pacers are positioning themselves for a competitive future, balancing talent acquisition with financial prudence. Buchanan remarked, “You look at these teams that are still playing [in the playoffs], they all have very, very good starting fives,” underscoring the need for a strong starting lineup to contend for a championship. The Pacers are optimistic that Zubac’s arrival will contribute to their immediate success while maintaining flexibility for future roster improvements.
