Pirates Seek Relief Reinforcements as Trade Market Heats Up
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in urgent need of bolstering their bullpen, which has been a source of frustration this season, contributing to numerous close losses. Since May, the team’s relievers have ranked among the lowest in the league, with a 5.10 ERA, 4.53 FIP, an 11.3% walk rate, and an 8.5% barrel rate. As the calendar flips to June, the trade market for relief pitchers is beginning to take shape, with significant deals expected in July.
One standout option on the market is Aroldis Chapman, a veteran reliever who has revitalized his career with the Boston Red Sox. Over the past 80 innings, Chapman has posted an impressive 1.01 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, and 1.72 FIP, striking out 36.7% of batters while only allowing three home runs. Although he would be a costly rental, the Pirates may consider reaching out, though a trade seems unlikely.
In addition to Chapman, the Pirates could explore other valuable options. Brooks Raley, currently with the New York Mets, has emerged as an underrated asset since returning from injury, boasting a 2.06 ERA and limiting hard contact effectively. Garrett Whitlock of the Red Sox has also made a name for himself, demonstrating a strong 2.45 ERA and a solid strikeout rate, although he is currently on the injured list.
Among potential middle-inning options, Antonio Senzatela of the Colorado Rockies has transitioned to a bullpen role with great success, recording a 1.30 ERA. Meanwhile, Yennier Cano, who had a rocky 2025 season, has rebounded this year, maintaining a 2.75 ERA and a high groundball rate. The Pirates may also consider Enyel De Los Santos, who has shown promise with a 3.33 ERA and good control.
As the Pirates look to improve their struggling bullpen, several intriguing candidates are expected to be available. With the trade deadline approaching, the team's decision-makers will need to weigh their options carefully to secure the help they desperately need.
